What is a Pattern

Pattern pages are used for working with RKC patterns. Patterns can be added by referencing them from the Pattern tab of Person, Social-Entity, Community of Place, or Community of Practice pages.

The Main section contains:

  • a few required fields, such as a ordering structure and usage mode, brief description, parent/sibling/offspring of Pattern and page curator(s);
  • optionally, one has the ability to display relevant images, give a full name, and longer description;
  • and, lastly, a summary of key relations which have a pattern on their "playlist" are provided here as well.

SDG 10 represents yet another empty promise.

SDG shortcomings

SDG 10, reduce inequality within and among countries, is an unattainable for several reasons. For one, it assumes that equality is somehow reachable via extractive/destructive model of development, which harms communities, degrades ecosystems, and concentrates control and value extracted in the hands of a very few. It also assumes, that global sameness produced via this model--dissolving the unique essence of places--is somehow desirable. It further assumes, that nation-states--and their institutional vehicles explicitly set up to propagate and protect extractive/destructive development model, of which their existence is now dependent--are beneficial societal infrastructures worth sustain.

Living systems

Living systems invest and distribute a wild diversity of generative capacities into every being. It would be unfathomable to put all its "eggs into one basket," so to speak. Ecosystems and ecosystems of ecosystems are structured so that communities of beings thrive explicitly via interdependent web of mutually-beneficial relations. Energy, and the ability to tap it in a multitude of ways, in living systems is polycentric and acentric. There is no wastage. Power is not concentrated. Control is untenable. Competition, conflict, and parasitism are hyper-localized and create mutualistic benefits at higher levels of self-organization.

Self-organizing bioregions

Bioregions represent the missing scale, the proverbial middle ground, between the local and the global. Their promise lies in their potential to align governance of the commons with the natural and organically-evolving boundaries of the lifesheds our Communities of Place are embedded. Due to their place-centric nature, they are an ideal scale for place-sourced organization of activity, such the development of localized food systems (foodsheds) and local living economies.

It is important to recognize, that even the most well-intended approaches, are in danger of repeating the same patterns and thinking, they are designed to overcome. In the case of bioregions, there is an overwhelming tendency for defining boundaries. This means that someone or some institution, defines where one bioregion begins and where another ends, which communities are included or excluded in a given configuration. This is working from a do-good paradigm.

RDA. 10 introduces the idea of the self-organizing bioregions. With this notion, there is no need to define boundaries. Anywhere there is a constellation of collaborative and/or co-creative relations emerging amongst various Communities of Place in beneficial geographic proximity, we find a bioregion self-organizing. This builds from Christopher Alexander's Theory of Centers, which explains how wholeness and aliveness unfolds via living structure all throughout the Universe.

As in living systems, self-organizing bioregions have centers, but no hard boundaries. These are messy, the overlap with other bioregions. They change, transform and evolve. They merge with each other, when mutually-beneficial or separate when they get too large. Smaller ones are nested in larger ones. What defines them are the strength of their relations that hold them together from some center.

Herein, lies the promise of evolving human settlements, social systems and cultures that can begin to embed gracefully into the larger ecosystems and Life processes that all Life depends on.
