Description_LongTextSDG 12. Ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns, is basically saying everything is ok, keep shopping, just make better choices. ==SDG Shortcomings== SDG 12's inadequacy to boldly call for new regenerative patterns, based on a wildly different relation amongst Humans, and between Humans and their places (including the more-than-Human living world), does not ensures the Earth's productive capacity will continue. ==Context== Existing consumption and production patterns ought not to be sustained. They perpetuate the extractive, industrialized economy, which ensures patterns continued and intensified decimation of the planet's ecosystems and communities. The inherent and explicit disconnect of the roles of consumption with production, allows for the majority of people to play consumers, consuming stuff that is made from materials extracted in dubious ways, often requiring production processes that produce massive toxic wastes, somewhere else where it remains unseen, and then that product is shipped anywhere on the planet. ==Living systems== It is the nature of Life and living systems to be productive. And, also to be consumptive. Yet, these two roles are inseparable in living systems, which as Heraclitus observed so long ago, die to live and live to die. The intimate proximity of these two roles in wild ecosystems, which are by definition place-centric and whose living processes are place-sourced, is what ensures their ongoing regeneration. Primary production is a term borrowed from ecology, which points to an ecosystem's capacity to use sunlight to produce plant life, which in turn provide potential energy that powers animated beings that inhabit a food web. Those animated beings throughout their lives and by their death, return the favor by building soil, that in turn feeds plant life. All that to say production-consumption--purposely co-joined here--is a vital fact of Life. What matters is that they are not decoupled nor displaced. ==Place-sourced primary production== RDA 12 calls for patterns that are an outgrowth and continuation of those we observe in wild ecosystems. It calls for communities to radically reorganize around patterns of primary production. This can be done by placing plant life at the center of our local living economies by means of regenerative agriculture and agroforestry. Regenerative practices ensure that the long-term regenerative capacity of the ecosystems is maintained and enhanced, while communities and the land benefit from what can be produced there gracefully (i.e. without high-energy and/or toxic inputs). The oft-used term, place-based, is wholly inadequate. Anything can be said to be place-based, indeed, everything is. A distant factory is based in a place. The term place-sourced is used to signify that primary production originates, is embedded in and responsive to place. Place-sourced primary production requires many diverse livelihoods and produces the need for even more diverse livelihoods (making, serving, moving, selling, etc. what's grown/harvested) that can become the basis for local living economies to emerge. This requires the capacity of a large number of people to be producers and the role of production to become polycentrically distributed. Taken as a development strategy, RDA 12 can work at multiples scales, from the hyperlocal to the bioregional, to restore ecological processes, cycles, flows; reweave social relations, reintegrate people with their places, the land, what we might care for in common; bring greater food and material abundance and sovereignty; reverse climate catastrophe, and who knows what else. ==Pattern generators== This aim could be generative of the following patterns in any Community of Place of any scale. *invest in place-sourced primary production that surpasses all material needs (i.e. creates food and material abundance) for all beings in a community in a manner that regenerates that places' productive capacity [12.1] *assist in the regeneration of wild ecosystems everywhere, not by isolating or conserving them, but by integrating them whole-heartedly into regenerative patterns of place-sourced primary production [12.2a] *restore the productive capacity of the land in Communities of Place everywhere, prioritizing cities and heavily disturbed landscapes [12.2b] *eliminate food and organic waste, close the cycle by producing living soil and energy in the form of biogas [12.3] *completely eliminate the need for toxic chemicals/substances, forbid their production and find safe ways to decompose existing toxic substance [12.4a] *Invest in research in and development of carbon farming, by which many of the synthetic products we rely on today, can be be made from regeneratively-harvested plant-based materials. [12.4b] *close material cycles and eliminate waste generation through repair/reuse (waste = food) [12.5] *de-charter large and transnational corporate entities whose business models inhibit them from participating regeneratively in place-sourced primary production [12.6a] *entities, corporate and other, reorganize their operations ways that acknowledge the primacy of local-living economies based on place-sourced primary production [12.6b] *promote public procurement practices that favor place-sourced primary production [12.7] *support people everywhere to participate in the regeneration of their Communities of Place by activating their fullest potential through capacity-building and the creation and valuing of meaningful work via genuine wealth and right livelihoods [12.8] *support more vulnerable Communities of Place to develop the regenerative capacity for food and material abundance [12.a] *equip Communities of Place with sufficient resources to develop their own pathways to unfold regeneratively [12.b-c] Note: SDG target linkages in brackets
